Knight's Shadow

The Greatcoats Book 2

By Sebastien de Castell
Read by Joe Jameson

  • Hardback
  • £16.99

The Three Musketeers meets Joe Abercrombie via Mark Lawrence. The Greatcoats have found the heir to the throne . . . but now they must keep her alive, against all the odds.

'One hell of a good book' Conn Iggulden

The Greatcoats have found the heir to the throne . . . but now they must keep her alive, against all the odds.

Falcio Val Mond has completed the final task given to him by the late King Paelis: he has found the King's Charoites (well, one at least). But his task isn't over, and now he, Kest and Brasti must protect the girl from those her want her dead.

That would be simple enough, if it weren't for the renegade Knights and legendary Dashini assassins, getting in their way, not to mention the Dukes, who are desperate to hold on to their power at any cost, or Trin, the merciless daughter of the ruthless Duke of Rijou and the cruel Duchess of Hervor, who is determined to be Queen of Tristia. Of course, the fact that the heir to the throne is thirteen years old doesn't help, nor the fact that every day brings Falcio closer to dying from the poison running through his veins.

And then there is the Greatcoats Lament . . .

Biographical Notes

Sebastien de Castell had just finished a degree in Archaeology when he started work on his first dig. Four hours later he realised how much he hated archaeology and left to pursue a very focused career as a musician, ombudsman, interaction designer, fight choreographer, teacher, project manager, actor and product strategist. After a year in the Netherlands, he has recently returned to Vancouver, Canada, where he lives with his wife and two belligerent cats.

There's a new kick-ass guardian joining the ranks. Watch out, Harry Dresden, Kinsey Malhone and Mercy Thompson: Verity Fassbinder's out to save the world from a crazy archangel!Things have been rough for Verity, and the cracks are starting to show. She's agreed to take her mother's place as the 'Guardian's Hound', serving a dreadfully injured (and fairly insane) Archangel skulking in the Underworld. It doesn't like divided loyalties, so to keep them safe, V's sent her husband David and newborn baby Maisie away, and quit working for Bela Tepes and the Weyrd Council. Being cut off from friends and family is doing no favours for V's temper, and not having access to the resources of the Weyrd Council's Archives is making her work somewhat problematic. She's been tasked with finding a 'tyrant' and 'a hope' - her new boss was a little hazy on the first item, but quite clear about the second, a Holy Grail - the damaged angel badly needs its healing power. Verity's pretty sure that helping out the angel is in no one's best interest, but she's got no choice. She made a bargain. At least the angel didn't notice how carefully V worded their agreement. But V's not entirely alone: the Archivist Jost Marolf is on her side; her friend Mel is eager to help, and her newly discovered Uncle Ziggi has also quit the Weyrd Council in order to stand with his niece. She just might get through this intact . . . until her mother, battered and bruised, turns up on her doorstep: David and Maisie have been taken.V's world is about to get very dangerous indeed.'Edgy, hilarious and full of heart - Verity is back and as brilliant as ever!' Watch out, Harry Dresden, Kinsey Milhone and Mercy Thompson: there's a new kick-ass guardian in town and Verity Fassbinder's taking no nonsense from anyone, not even the fox-spirit assassins who are invading Brisbane in this fast-paced sequel to VIGIL.Life in Brisbane is never simple for those who walk between the worlds.Verity's all about protecting her city, but right now that's mostly running surveillance and handling the less exciting cases for the Weyrd Council - after all, it's hard to chase the bad guys through the streets of Brisbane when you're really, really pregnant. 'Verity is the best thing about the book . . . she's a surly, straight-talking, Doc Marten-wearing punchbag who investigates Weyrd-related crime on behalf of the beleaguered "normal" police' (SFX)An insurance investigation sounds pretty harmless, even if it is for 'Unusual Happenstance'. That's not usually a clause Normals use - it covers all-purpose hauntings, angry genii loci, ectoplasmic home invasion, demonic possession, that sort of thing - but Susan Beckett's claimed three times in three months. Her house keeps getting inundated with mud, but she's still insisting she doesn't need or want help . . . until the dry-land drownings begin.V's first lead in takes her to Chinatown, where she is confronted by kitsune assassins. But when she suddenly goes into labour, it's clear the fox spirits are not going to be helpful.Corpselight, the sequel to Vigil, is the second book in the Verity Fassbinder series by award-winning author Angela Slatter.'Simply put: Slatter can write! She forces us to recognise the monsters that are ourselves' Jack Dann, award-winning author.

'Intricate and crisp, witty and solemn: a book with special and dangerous properties' - Hilary MantelThe town of Rotherweird stands alone - there are no guidebooks, despite the fascinating and diverse architectural styles cramming the narrow streets, the avant garde science and offbeat customs. Cast adrift from the rest of England by Elizabeth I, Rotherweird's independence is subject to one disturbing condition: nobody, but nobody, studies the town or its history. For beneath the enchanting surface lurks a secret so dark that it must never be rediscovered, still less reused. But secrets have a way of leaking out.Two inquisitive outsiders have arrived: Jonah Oblong, to teach modern history at Rotherweird School (nothing local and nothing before 1800), and the sinister billionaire Sir Veronal Slickstone, who has somehow got permission to renovate the town's long-derelict Manor House.Slickstone and Oblong, though driven by conflicting motives, both strive to connect past and present, until they and their allies are drawn into a race against time - and each other. The consequences will be lethal and apocalyptic.Welcome to Rotherweird!'Baroque, Byzantine and beautiful - not to mention bold' M.R. Carey
