Alastair Reynolds on the power of blog comments…

So I thought you’d like to know about a bit of promotional activity which came out of the blue…

Back in May I blogged about science in Doctor Who and how (much as I’m a fan) I felt that the new series wasn’t really addressing the rationalist elements of the doctor’s character as much as I’d like it to. A couple of days later I followed that up with another post about the current Stargate: Universe series and how I felt that that show was doing a good job of handling science in the context of a popular TV series. This was followed a day or two later by an email from none other than one of the producers of the Stargate series, Joseph Mallozzi.

It turned out that Mallozzi was a fan (he’d already read Revelation Space) and he was pleased to find that I liked the show. He then went on to mention my blog post on *his* blog, which has a huge following as it is one of the main insider websites related to that show. He then proposed to make House of Suns his “book of the month” for July, and invited his readers to pick it up, read it, and then come up with questions for me. Late last month Joseph sent me a huge list of Q&A’s and I then responded to them, and they were posted on his site.

It may not have made a huge difference, but it’s clear that quite a few of his regulars were persuaded to give the book a try, so hopefully I reached out to some non-core SF readers in the process.

Here’s the post: Link

Just goes to show that a lot can flow from a simple comment or two on a blog…
