SF Gateway Author of the Month: R A MacAvoy

So, it’s spring, at last (according to the calendar, if not the actual weather . . .) and time for another SF Gateway Author of the Month.  This month’s spotlight goes to a wonderful fantasy writer who burst onto the scene in the early ’80s, winning the John W Campbell Award for Best New Writer: R A MacAvoy.

Roberta Ann MacAvoy is, of course, the author of the acclaimed Trio for Lute trilogy – comprising Damiano, Damiano’s Lute and Raphael – set in a magical alternative Renaissance Europe. She is also the author of the highly-regarded Celtic-fantasy-meets-time-travel novel The Book of Kells.

It is her debut novel, though, that is synonymous with her name: the extraordinary Tea With the Black Dragon, which was published in 1984, was shortlisted for the Hugo, Nebula, World Fantasy and Philip K. Dick Awards. The winners of those awards, incidentally, were Startide Rising (twice), The Dragon Waiting and The Anubis Gates, respectively, so you can see that R A MacAvoy was keeping exalted company right from the start of her career.
