Verity Fassbinder Book 2

By Angela Slatter

  • Paperback
  • £13.99

Watch out, Harry Dresden - there's a new kick-ass guardian in town and Verity Fassbinder's taking no nonsense from anyone, not even the fox-spirit assassins who are invading Brisbane

Sequel to VIGIL, this fast-paced urban fantasy is perfect for fans of Harry Dresden and Kinsey Malhone.

Life in Brisbane is never simple for those who walk between the worlds.

Verity's all about protecting her city, but right now that's mostly running surveillance and handling the less exciting cases for the Weyrd Council - after all, it's hard to chase the bad guys through the streets of Brisbane when you're really, really pregnant.

An insurance investigation sounds pretty harmless, even if it is for 'Unusual Happenstance'. That's not usually a clause Normals use - it covers all-purpose hauntings, angry genii loci, ectoplasmic home invasion, demonic possession, that sort of thing - but Susan Beckett's claimed three times in three months. Her house keeps getting inundated with mud, but she's still insisting she doesn't need or want help . . . until the dry-land drownings begin.

V's first lead in takes her to Chinatown, where she is confronted by kitsune assassins. But when she suddenly goes into labour, it's clear the fox spirits are not going to be helpful.

Corpselight is the sequel to Vigil and the second book in the Verity Fassbinder series by award-winning author Angela Slatter.

'Simply put: Slatter can write! Beautifully, stylishly, accurately. She forces us to recognise the monsters that are ourselves' - Jack Dann, award-winning author.

Angela Slatter's ink is full of intimate magic and hard wisdom. Her characters live and breathe and glance out at you from the page to question your motives. One of the best dark fantasy writers working today — Christopher Golden, New York Times bestselling author of ARARAT and SNOWBLIND
Straight up 5* no messing. Brilliant. Read the entire thing in a huge gulp. SO addictive, beautifully done, Vigil was great but this was greater. Erm . . . better? Whatever. Superb. Witty, dark, increasingly fascinating characters and a GORGEOUS set up ending to make you desperate for the next one. — Liz Barnsley, Liz Loves Books/GoodReads
The Fassbinder fun continues. The only-half-Normal Brisbane sleuth has fox-spirits, ninja librarians and much, much worse to deal with now, even as motherhood gives her a makeover. Slatter's dark imaginings, spritzed with humour, pack age-old magic into a contemporary setting with a sure hand. This woman knows her stuff. — Margo Lanagan, author of Tender Morsels
Slatter's work is excellent, and eminently readable . . . It's easy to see how she's managed to make such an impact on the genre — British Fantasy Society
Edgy, hilarious and full of heart - Verity is back and as brilliant as ever!' — Alison Goodman, award-winning author of Lady Helen and the Dark Days Club

Half-Weyrd troubleshooter Verity Fassbinder is back: funny, capable, super-strong ... and this time heavily pregnant . . . Angela Slatter's writing is as deft and witty as ever. With its delicious blend of the mundane and the totally weird, CORPSELIGHT will make you laugh, shudder and keep turning pages until the very end.

— Juliet Marillier, award-winning author of the BLACKTHORN & GRIM series
The world of the Weyrd collides with modern-day Brisbane, bringing chaos in its wake. A brilliant new urban fantasy with elements of murder, mystery and magic - I'm already looking forward to the next Verity Fassbinder adventure — Alison Littlewood, author of A Cold Season
Simply put: Slatter can write! Beautifully, stylishly, accurately. She conjures ghosts and spirits and forces us to recognise the monsters that are ourselves . . . she conjures the secret and private worlds hidden just inside the curtains of reality, and she does it with sentences as sparse and sharp-edged as unused razor blades. She's my pick: a writer who will constantly surprise; and just when you think she's at the top of her game, she will go on to become impossibly better. Read this writer. She'll drop the scales right out of your eyes! — Jack Dann, award-winning author of The Memory Cathedral
Verity Fassbinder comes on like a high-octane mix of Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden and Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone - dry, smart, funny, fuelled by a need to protect the weak, and driven by a past that haunts her. Verity's BrisVegas is a far cry from the streets of Brisbane you'll see in tourist brochures, a dark supernatural playground where anything can happen and where the strangest of us can find safe haven. If you loved True Blood, or if you've ever loved a great PI series, then Vigil is for you. Smart, funny, and engaging. I can't wait for the sequel! — Jonathan Strahan, editor of The Best Science Fiction and Fantasy of the Year series
Like Aickman, her sense of the fantastic serves to show us the weird world we hold within our own psyches . . . Slatter's prose is often magnificent, and she's able to craft characters as great as the powers they wield — Rick Kleffel, American Public Radio Books on Angela Slatter
Rich and heady as honey mead, potent and earthy as great Scotch, the sublimely dark tales of Angela Slatter are an addictive delight — Neil Snowden

There's a new kick-ass guardian joining the ranks. Watch out, Harry Dresden, Kinsey Malhone and Mercy Thompson: Verity Fassbinder's out to save the world from a crazy archangel!Things have been rough for Verity, and the cracks are starting to show. She's agreed to take her mother's place as the 'Guardian's Hound', serving a dreadfully injured (and fairly insane) Archangel skulking in the Underworld. It doesn't like divided loyalties, so to keep them safe, V's sent her husband David and newborn baby Maisie away, and quit working for Bela Tepes and the Weyrd Council. Being cut off from friends and family is doing no favours for V's temper, and not having access to the resources of the Weyrd Council's Archives is making her work somewhat problematic. She's been tasked with finding a 'tyrant' and 'a hope' - her new boss was a little hazy on the first item, but quite clear about the second, a Holy Grail - the damaged angel badly needs its healing power. Verity's pretty sure that helping out the angel is in no one's best interest, but she's got no choice. She made a bargain. At least the angel didn't notice how carefully V worded their agreement. But V's not entirely alone: the Archivist Jost Marolf is on her side; her friend Mel is eager to help, and her newly discovered Uncle Ziggi has also quit the Weyrd Council in order to stand with his niece. She just might get through this intact . . . until her mother, battered and bruised, turns up on her doorstep: David and Maisie have been taken.V's world is about to get very dangerous indeed.'Edgy, hilarious and full of heart - Verity is back and as brilliant as ever!' Bernie Gunther returns in the thirteenth book in the Sunday Times and New York Times bestselling series, perfect for fans of John le Carre and Robert Harris.'One of the greatest anti-heroes ever written' LEE CHILD'One of the greatest master story-tellers in English' ALAN FURST1957, Munich. Bernie Gunther's latest move in a long string of varied careers sees him working for an insurance company. It makes a kind of sense: both cops and insurance companies have a vested interest in figuring out when people are lying to them, and Bernie has a lifetime of experience to call on.Sent to Athens to investigate a claim from a fellow German for a ship that has sunk, Bernie takes an instant dislike to the claimant. When he discovers the ship in question once belonged to a Greek Jew deported to Auschwitz, he is convinced the sinking was no accident but an avenging arson attack. Then the claimant is found dead, shot through both eyes. It's a win for Bernie's employers at least: no one to pay out to even if the claim is genuine. But who is behind the murder, and why?Strong-armed into helping the Greek police with their investigation, Bernie is once again drawn inexorably back to the dark history of the Second World War, and the deportation of the Jews of Salonika - now Thessaloniki. As Europe seems ready to move on to a more united future with Germany as a partner rather than an enemy, at least one person in Greece is ready neither to forgive nor forget. And, deep down, Bernie thinks they may have a point.

'One hell of a good book' Conn Iggulden The Greatcoats have found the heir to the throne . . . but now they must keep her alive, against all the odds.Falcio Val Mond has completed the final task given to him by the late King Paelis: he has found the King's Charoites (well, one at least). But his task isn't over, and now he, Kest and Brasti must protect the girl from those her want her dead. That would be simple enough, if it weren't for the renegade Knights and legendary Dashini assassins, getting in their way, not to mention the Dukes, who are desperate to hold on to their power at any cost, or Trin, the merciless daughter of the ruthless Duke of Rijou and the cruel Duchess of Hervor, who is determined to be Queen of Tristia. Of course, the fact that the heir to the throne is thirteen years old doesn't help, nor the fact that every day brings Falcio closer to dying from the poison running through his veins. And then there is the Greatcoats Lament . . .
