wild cardsYou might have heard a little announcement made by a certain behemoth of fantasy this week. If you haven’t, then please forgive our use of capitals for a moment while we shout about it:

GEORGE R.R. MARTIN’S WILD CARDS IS GOING TO BE A TV SERIES!

Phew, OK, now we’ve caught our breath from dancing around the office imagining who will be playing our favourite characters, we should probably talk about the Wild Cards books, just in case you haven’t already had the pleasure.

Wild Cards. Is. Amazing. It’s a series of books (and graphic novels, and games) that take place in a vast shared universe, which George edits with the assistance of Melinda M. Snodgrass. Over the years, the tale of this incredible universe has been told by George, Melinda and numerous, wildly talented writers. To name only a few, these have included Pat Cadigan, Daniel Abraham, Carrie Vaughn, Ian Tregillis, Cherie Priest, Paul Cornell, Saladin Ahmed and Roger Zelazny. The series begins with the aptly named WILD CARDS, though it isn’t necessary to read every book before jumping in at the latest. If you fancy a trilogy you can just start at The American Heroes Triad, for example. Wherever you decide to jump in, it might be time to consider your current to-read pile well and truly superseded (emphasis on the ‘super’).

Here’s the set up in George’s own words:

The shared world of the Wild Cards diverged from our own on September 15, 1946 when an alien virus was released in the skies over Manhattan, and spread across an unsuspecting Earth. Of those infected, 90% died horribly, drawing the black queen, 9% were twisted and deformed into jokers, while a lucky 1% became blessed with extraordinary and unpredictable powers and became aces. The world was never the same.

Thrilling, yes?

We are so proud to be the UK publisher for the Wild Cards series, and we’re so pleased to be able to share our love of this unique, ever-evolving and constantly surprising series with even more of you.

As for the TV series, the company behind it is Universal Cable Productions (UCP) and Melinda M. Snodgrass is on board as an executive producer, so we know it’s in exceedingly capable and cool hands. UCP have created a whole plethora of brilliant shows, including Mr Robot, Lev Grossman’s The Magicians, 12 Monkeys and Colony. Development is going to begin immediately, so we’re already preparing to bid a fond farewell to our social lives.
