An elegant handbook in typography, for the professional and amateur text designer.

Typographic Style Handbook is an indispensable new manual for anyone working with text - books, journals, company reports, websites or marketing material - who wishes to develop an understanding of how to produce clean, clear and consistent typography.

The handbook is divided into three sections:
General typesetting covers the basic rules of setting text
Books and journals explains the typographic styles used within the publishing industry
Corporate style describes how the treatment of text can be integrated into an organisation's branding guidelines.

Typographic rules and styles are copiously illustrated with examples and diagrams

Alternative styles are listed and explained to enable users to develop their own 'house style'

Includes a glossary and appendices to aid students and self-publishers

Typographic Style Handbook is destined to become a classic manual alongside Judith Butcher's Copy-editing, Hart's Rules, The Economist Style Guide and the Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors.

A good style guide knows its role as a working document - and that's why the Typographic Style Handbook has become a new favourite of mine . . . It is remarkably readable and accessible
and I would guess its appeal is much
broader than its intended design-led
audience.

— Mark Sinclair, Creative Review

In his time as a typographer, Mitchell co-wrote several typographic bibles alongside Wightman that went on to
inform many graphic designers and publishers about best practice in laying out pages
and type.

— Design Week

Michael Mitchell was one of the leading typographers of his day . . . The books are already recognised as classics and are indispensable. They combine his wisdom with his learning, his tact with his taste and subtly guide their
reader towards perfection.

The Book of My Dreams

THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLEROur dreams are the diaries of our lives: as personal and unique as fingerprints, they are a record of our subconscious. More often than not, they are everything we never confess out loud, not even to ourselves. We all sleep every night. We don't always remember what we dreamed about and we almost never wonder why we have these dreams. But dreams can be a map of the things we want in the future, they can cure past neuroses and help us to understand the present. That's why they are so important. That's why they can be critical to our lives. The Book of My Dreams is a personal secret diary. It is a guide to drawing, outlining and identifying the motives and reasons behind the adventures that you experience each night. But mostly, it is like a writing manual that allows you to put down on paper the ultimate diary - one that comes from the fears, desires and joys that inspire your dreams. It also acts as a guide to understanding them and understanding yourself. The Book of My Dreams is unique. Like your dreams. Like you.

John Law

James Buchan
Authors:
James Buchan

John Law of Lauriston blazed like a meteor over Europe and America in the early eighteenth century before falling to earth. At the summit of his reputation in 1720, a period lasting just over a hundred days, Law was the most powerful man in France after the Regent, the Duke of Orléans. For France, brought to the brink by the wars and extravagances of the Sun King, Louis XIV, Law's financial innovations were a lifeline, but had for consequence a stock-market boom across Europe that he was unable to control. The Mississippi Bubble, as it became known, plunged France into a severe economic depression, laying the groundwork for revolution.Over the centuries, John Law has been portrayed as a crook, a rake and an economist of modern character. James Buchan shows Law was none of those but a powerful mind in thrall to a vision of public prosperity that overrode all ties to country, property or happiness. Using Law's letters and writings, neglected family papers in Scotland and English county towns, bank ledgers in Genoa and Holland, notarial records and secret police reports in France and Venice, as well as the archive of the Jacobite Court in exile, Buchan resurrects Law's vagabond career. The result is a portrait of one of the most astonishing lives ever lived.

Pietro Bartolo, Lidia Tilotta
Authors:
Pietro Bartolo, Lidia Tilotta

"Bartolo tells us about rescuing everyone he can, burying those he cannot, and saving their stories as if they were his own. This is a personal, urgent and universal book" GLORIA STEINEM"An urgent, wrenching dispatch from the frontline of the defining crisis of our times . . . Bartolo is at once the saviour and the coroner to boatload after boatload of migrants who risk everything to cross the deadly seas. It is also a damning indictment of the broader, collective indifference of humankind to both the drowned and the saved" PHILIP GOUREVITCH"Dr Pietro Bartolo has seen more suffering and death in his career than any one man should have to witness" Amnesty International"Through Bartolo we understand that it is impossible to do nothing in the face of such great human need" Vanity FairIt is common to think of the refugee crisis as a recent phenomenon, but Dr Pietro Bartolo, who runs the clinic on the Italian island of Lampedusa, has been caring for its victims - both the living and the dead - for a quarter of a century.Situated some 200 km off Italy's Southern coast, Lampedusa has hit the world headlines in recent years as the first port of call for hundreds of thousands of African and Middle Eastern migrants hoping to make a new life in Europe. The shipwrecks began in 1992. Before the Arab Spring, they came from Africa, but now they come from across the Arab world as well. And the death toll is staggering. On Christmas Eve, 1996, 286 bodies were recovered; on the night of October 3, 2003, 366 out of 500 migrants died after a shipwreck nearby. For the past twenty-five years, Doctor Bartolo has been rescuing, welcoming, helping, and providing medical assistance to those who survived. But, above all, he has been listening to them. Tales of pain and hope, stories of those who didn't make it, who died at sea, their bodies washed up on shore; stories of those who lost their loved ones, of babies that never had a chance to be born.Translated from the Italian by Chenxin Jiang

Making Things Right

Ole Thorstensen
Authors:
Ole Thorstensen

A celebration of good craftsmanship by a Norwegian master carpenter - the anatomy of a job well done."An enriching and poetic tribute to manual labour" Karl Ove Knausgård"In Thorstensen's skilled hands, the everyday story of a suburban loft conversion is turned into an urgent study on the value of doing good work. It should be widely read." Robert Penn - author of The Man Who Made Things Out of TreesThis is, quite simply, the story of a loft conversion. It is also a book about work and identity, about collaboration and pride in skilled craftsmanship, and about what it means to make things with your hands in a consumerism-driven world. A master carpenter and builder with thirty years' experience, Thorstensen gives a matter-of-fact, reflective voice to the workers who construct our living spaces and our urban environment. He looks upon his tools as an important part of himself and as a reflection of his respect for his trade, and he addresses the gulf in understanding and communication between skilled craftsmen and "academic" workers. From the moment of a client's phone call to their occupation of a newly constructed living space, Making Things Right tracks the project as it takes shape: the delicate negotiation to establish an optimum plan; the collaboration with a trusted team of specialist painters, plasterers, plumbers, electricians; the handling of materials; the blood, sweat and frustration involved in doing a job well. Why is it that manual skills are underestimated? After all, working with your hands gives you time to think. With all its practical detail, Making Things Right is the simple philosophy of a working life. Will interest readers of The Craftsman by Richard Sennett: Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain; The Man Who Made Things Out of Trees by Robert Penn; Do No Harm by James Marsh and A Shepherd's Life by James RebanksTranslated from the Norwegian by Sean Kinsella

You Should Have Left

Daniel Kehlmann
Authors:
Daniel Kehlmann

A thrilling exploration of psychological disturbance and fear from the bestselling and prize-winning author of Measuring the World. On retreat in the wintry Alps with his family, a writer is optimistic about completing the sequel to his breakthrough film. Nothing to disturb him except the wind whispering around their glassy house. The perfect place to focus. Intruding on that peace of mind, the demands of his four-year-old daughter splinter open long-simmering arguments with his wife. I love her, he writes in the notebook intended for his script. Why do we fight all the time?Guilt and expectation strain at his concentration, and strain, too, at the walls of the house. They warp under his watch; at night, looking through the window, he sees impossible reflections on the snow outside. Then the words start to appear in his notebook; the words he didn't write.Familiar and forbidding by turns, this is an electrifying experiment in form by one of Europe's boldest writers. The ordinary struggles of a marriage transform, in Kehlmann's hands, into a twisted fable that stays darkly in the mind.
