‘Inventive . . . absorbing and rewarding’ – Kirkus
The rebellion is over. But their trials have just begun . . .
Victory for the Shadari rebels has come at a terrible price. Hardship, superstition and a murderous cabal poison King Daryan’s young regime, but help is nowhere to be found: the mercenary who led their rebellion has vanished, their Nomas allies have troubles of their own, and the Norlanders who returned home to plead – or fight – for the Shadari’s independence have found themselves embroiled in the court politics of an empire about to implode.
As the foundations of the two far-flung countries begin to crack, an enigmatic figure watches from a tower room in Ravindal Castle. She is old, and a prisoner, but her reach is long, and her patience is about to be rewarded . . .
‘I loved these characters, even though I knew it was going to hurt. Heart-wrenching. Poignant. Lovely’ – Brandon Sanderson on Blood’s Pride

Inventive . . . absorbing and rewarding
The suspense, character development, and worldbuilding are all superior, and the ominous tone of the opening is sustained throughout
The characters work wonderfully well and when you get to the meat of the story, the reader is in for one hell of a ride. All round a cracking book and a title that keeps its strengths building
Captivating, dynamic characters with even more intriguing relationships
I loved these characters, even though I knew it was going to hurt. Heart-wrenching. Poignant. Lovely
Superb
A remarkable feat for a newcomer, and leaves me eager for the sequel, Fortune's Blight
Her ability to insert beautiful descriptions into an action-packed scene is certainly the mark of a talented writer and the series only looks set to become more exciting as the story progresses.
Intrigue, betrayal and old rivalries play out against the fires of revolution. Hang on for a wild ride!
Picture the fluent prose and flawless world-building of an author such as Trudi Canavan combined with the epic plot and character lists of an author like Martin and you won't be far off . . . Her ability to contrast beauty with brutality, hope with despair and love with hate will secure this novel as one of the year's finest
