A thrilling summer chiller from the new Stephen King

By Mats Strandberg

  • Hardback
  • £18.99

On the Baltic Sea, no one can hear you scream. A summer thriller, perfect for fans of Stephen King and John Ajvide Linqvist.

'Blood Cruise is terrifying and terrifying real, a must-read for fans of Stephen King and John Ajvide Lindqvist' - Elizabeth Hand, author of Generation Loss and Hard Light

On the Baltic Sea, no one can hear you scream.

Tonight, twelve hundred expectant passengers have joined the booze-cruise between Sweden and Finland. The creaking old ship travels this same route, back and forth, every day of the year.

But this trip is going to be different.

In the middle of the night the ferry is suddenly cut off from the outside world. There is nowhere to escape. There is no way to contact the mainland. And no one knows who they can trust.

Welcome aboard the Baltic Charisma.

'I will never set foot on a cruise ship again!' - Åsa Larsson, bestselling author of The Second Deadly Sin and Until thy Wrath Be Past

Biographical Notes

Mats Strandberg, an award-winning writer of adult, YA and children's fiction, was born in the small industrial town of Fagersta, in the middle of the Swedish forest; the place inspired Engelsfors, the setting for the internationally bestselling YA fantasy Engelfors Trilogy (with co-author Sara B. Elfgren). The Circle, Fire and The Key (UK: Cornerstone; US: Overlook Press), are published in 30 countries, and ABBA founder Benny Andersson has turned the first book, The Circle, into a hit movie.

Blood Cruise, his fourth solo novel, is a top ten bestseller across Europe; Mats is currently writing the screenplay (with frequent collaborator Sara Elfgren).

His award-winning journalism won him Columnist of the Year for his regular columns for Aftonbladet, Sweden's biggest evening newspaper.

Mats Strandberg knows how to write horror. I bite my nails. I laugh and I cry. And I will never set foot on a cruise ship again! — Åsa Larsson, bestselling author of The Second Deadly Sin and Until thy Wrath Be Past
Mats Strandberg is a literary cult waiting to happen: Blood Cruise is terrifying and terrifying real, a must-read for fans of Stephen King and John Ajvide Lindqvist — Elizabeth Hand, author of Generation Loss and Hard Light
A rip-roaring, redraw horror thriller which zips along without pausing for breath . . . Grim, gripping and claustrophobic . . . Blood Cruise is a real blast of fetid air in vampire fiction, viscerally enjoyable, deftly plotted and throbbing with a real sense of mounting horror and urgency. It's a rousing, vibrant and fabulously bloodthirsty read, which reminds us why we're supposed to be scared of vampires rather than simply finding them mysteriously attractive and alluring — Starburst
If you are a horror fan than I strongly suggest you check this novel out. Things start slow, but when all Hell finally breaks loose, it does so with an unrestrained glee . . . A strong contender for my horror novel of the year. Tense, emotional, and at times downright nasty. I loved it — The Eloquent Page
Mats Strandberg writes sharp as a fang and like the safe hand of a captain he effectively navigates his bloody action — Politiken (Denmark’s biggest newspaper)
Sweden has a new horror king — City magazine, Sweden
Mats Strandberg has an unbeatable skill in putting focus on Swedish everyday life and mixing it with classic horror. In Blood Cruise the Finnish ferry's sleepy everyday life became an inferno of blood — Dagens Nyheter (Sweden’s biggest morning paper)
As original as it is eerie — Andreas Trojan, Börsenblatt (Germany)
Read it! On one level it is about fear and how we react to when our reptile brain shouts "Run!" or "Fight!". On a different level, Strandberg is a very empathetic author. Give the book to everyone who loved The Circle . Or give it to anyone who adores Stephen King — Undgdomsbokheftet (Norway)
Buy it - Read it - Borrow it - Read it - Enjoy it - Read it - Share it -Read it - Read it! - Read it!! - Read it!! — Plusbog (Denmark)
The amazing thing about this novel is that the everyday events, the ordinary, are so sensitively portrayed. People should read this book: it is so good! — SVT (Swedish Television)
Strandberg leads his characters and their sentimental worlds very skilfully, with great attention to detail . . . This is really well done — Friederike Kipar; The book blogger (Germany)
Strandberg can make childhood demons come to life . . . the depiction of primitive fears and instincts are more frightening than the bloodbath the story develops into. Just like Strandberg's idol Stephen King, at his best, Strandberg builds up the tension slowly — Aftonbladet (Sweden's biggest evening paper)
Multi-layered, the perspectives are constantly shifting, and the reader is forced to refocus over and over' — Sydsvenskan (Sweden)
Highly entertaining and at the same time well-written. Thriller, mystery and especially horror fans will love it — Carmen Porschen, Multimania (Germany)
Mats Strandberg has written one of the best horror novels I have ever read. I was scared for real. And more important, I was touched for real — Folkbladet (Sweden)
On my book shelf Blood Cruise is placed right next to the best by Stephen King and John Ajvide Lindqvist. It will, with 100 per cent certainty, become a horror classic — Boktokig (Sweden)

A Different Drummer

Authors:
William Melvin Kelley

'The Lost Giant of American Literature' New YorkerThe month is June 1957. The setting is Sutton, a backwater town in a southern US state. One afternoon, a young black farmer by the name of Tucker Caliban matter-of-factly throws salt on his field, shoots his horse and livestock, sets fire to his house and departs the state; and thereafter the entire African-American population leave with him.The reaction that follows is told across a dozen chapters, each from the perspective of a white townsperson. These range from boys, girls, men, women; who are either liberal, conservative, bigoted or sympathetic - yet who are all grappling with this spontaneous, collective rejection of subordination.A Different Drummer is an exploration of what it is like to live in a white-dominated society. It's a transparent, brutally honest portrayal of the impact and repercussions of systematized oppression; with a culmination as unflinching and unrivalled as its author's insights.Includes foreword by Kathryn Schulz.

LONGLISTED FOR THE MAN BOOKER INTERNATIONAL 2018A TRUE STORY THAT IS PACKED WITH FICTION - FICTION CREATED BY ITS MAIN CHARACTER, ENRIC MARCOBut who is Enric Marco? A veteran of the Spanish Civil War, a fighter against fascism, an impassioned campaigner for justice, and a survivor of the Nazi death camps? Or, is he simply an old man with delusions of grandeur, a charlatan who fabricated his heroic war record, who was never a prisoner in the Third Reich and never opposed Franco; a charming, beguiling and compulsive liar who refashioned himself as a defender of liberty and who was unmasked in 2005 at the height of his influence and renown? In this extraordinary novel - part narrative, part history, part essay, part biography, part autobiography - Javier Cercas unravels the enigma of the man and delves with passion and honesty into the most ambiguous aspects of what makes us human - our infinite capacity for self-deception, our need for conformity, our thirst for affection and our conflicting needs for fiction and for truth.Translated from the Spanish by Frank Wynne

"Ambitious, affecting, intelligent, plangent, comic, kooky and impassioned. Roy Jacobsen

'A compact and compelling novel by an iconic Norwegian writer...[and] thanks to Don Bartlett and Don Shaw's crisp translation, we see it obliquely' - IndependentSet in Finland in 1939, this is the story of one man who remains in his home town when everyone else has fled, burning down their houses in their wake, before the invading Russians arrive. Timo remains behind because he can't imagine life anywhere else, doing anything else besides felling the trees near his home. This is a novel about belonging - a tale of powerful and forbidden friendships forged during a war, of unexpected bravery and astonishing survival instincts. The Burnt-Out Town of Miracles is not a novel about war, but about the lives of ordinary people dragged into war, each of whom only wants to find the path back home. Roy Jacobsen uses the dramatic natural landscape of light and darkness, fire-blazing heat and life-robbing cold to spectacular effect.
